Mississippi-Ukraine
Baptist Partnership
Like much of Eastern Europe the people of the Ukraine were left starved
for truth and have a hunger for spiritual things.
In the past ten years 900 Baptist churches have grown to more than 2,000.
Many people are coming to Christ. People are hungry for spiritual truth.
October 1-10, 2004 we ministered in Mykolayiv area using
medical-dental-evangelism tools. I found people eager to listen to the
gospel message and responsive to Biblical truth.
"The Baptist name is important because Baptists have died for their name
here," says a prominent evangelical leader.
Under Soviet communism they struggled just to survive.
Everywhere I went I came into contact with many people who had listened to
GOLAS ANDE, "the Voice of the Andes," missionary radio station HCJB,
Quito, Ecuador. GOLAS ANDE broadcast the gospel 11 hours each day in the
Russian language to Eastern Europe by shortwave radio since 1940. At least
80% of the audience raised their hands at each worship service indicating
they listened to HCJB and had been encouraged to remain faithful to the
Lord during those difficult years of persecution. Everyday people came up
to me and gave testimony of God's sustaining grace.
 The
emphasis is on church planting and evangelism. Ukrainian Baptist's will
not baptize a person until the person has made a lifelong commitment to
follow Jesus Christ. One leader says, "A quick decision leads people
not to take it seriously."
"Baptists here won't baptize you until your repentance and your trust in
Jesus have made a difference in the way you live."
A typical worship service last for two hours and will include two or three
sermons, several choir numbers and poetry. A single invitation is given at
the end of the service.
 I
was impressed with the maturity of the believers and their fervent love
and commitment to Jesus Christ.
Our Mississippi Baptist Partnership Mission Team ministered to physical
needs, and shared the good news in Jesus Christ in five rural communities
along the Black Sea in the most unreached areas of the Ukraine.
Pray for the largest Baptist Union in all of Europe as they accept the
challenge to reach a nation of 50 million people.
Pray that they will be able to plant a church in every village in this
nation the geographical size of Texas.
